Georgios Georgiopoulos

Mayor of Ancient Olympia

George Georgiopoulos was born in the village Mouria of the shire Ilia in 1955. He studied law at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 1982, he practiced a freelance profession, while he working as a Legal Advisor for the Agricultural Bank of Greece.
 

During the period 2001-2004 he was President of Regulations of the Football Associations Committee.

The period 2000 – 2003 he was a member of the Legislative  Committee of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. He has significant experience in public administration, having served as Director in the Ministry of Transport and Communications (1996-1997) and the Ministry of Justice (2009-2010).
 

He was a candidate in 2010 in the elections for the first elected Region, the Regional Unit of Ilia, and was elected Regional Councilor. He served as Deputy Regional Minister of Finance and Social Solidarity during the first two years of operation of the institution and Chairman of the Economic Committee. He was the Rapporteur for the study of the implementation of the minimum guaranteed income for the Region of Western Greece, which later became state law.
 

In the Regional elections of 2014, he was elected Deputy Regional Governor of Ilia, a position he held until August 2019.
 

He was elected Mayor of Ancient Olympia in June 2019.

He is married and is father of one daughter.
